4 – Ways to get used to new custom habits and life styles
+ For those who live abroad for the first time, although your
study must place at the first, you should pay attention to
getting acquainted with new friends and finding a suitable
accommodation. Your adaptability to new life will affect your
study success, communication and your health.
+ When you study abroad, you must adapt to new, active and
diversified culture in a new country. Despite you are good at
observing and know well your new friends in that country, you
will sometimes be surprised at their behaviour. So what will you
do before your study time? First, you should smile and get
relaxed. Then observe and hear from all around. Feel the
cultural differences that you have just experienced in a
humorous way.
+ Your punctual start is considered as the respect – in foreign
countries, the people really respect nimbleness. They will lose
their respect on you when you are late, especially for the first
time. If you arrive late even just 5 minutes for your interview,
you will lose your right to be interviewed. Any punctual start
can be considered as unrespect. If you are about to remember
only one thing, that is : To be on time, even earlier. If for
some unexpected reasons you are late, you should say “Sorry”.
+ Shaking hands is considered as a greeting, whoever you are,
male or female, young or old. However you must be careful not to
touch any stranger. If you unintensionally touch any stranger in
a crowd, always remember to say “Sorry” to them.
+ You should keep away from the strangers and your classmates 3
footsteps during your communications or in a queue. When you get
closer than that, they will feel uncomfortable. Whenever you do
not know anything, do observe the people around. And if there is
something wrong, you should smile and ask “ What’s wrong?”
+ You must anticipate that you will have to suffer from the
process of adapting everything, even you have good adaptability.
+ You should find some Vietnamese friends to share your feeling.
+ Participate in some activites of your university or school
such as : sport, Student’s club, or works within the school or
university. Make a group of friends.
+ You should agree if someone invite you to have meal with them.
Otherwise you will lose the chance. If there is no one who
invite you for meals, do invite someone for meal with you.
+ Prepare in advance some questions to get acquainted with the
native students about the weather, sport, festival dates, or
their family members, etc.
Success in adaptability to new culture is so wonderful! Your
harmony with another culture will support you much in your
future life.
